Safety is the keynote of this workshop!  Techniques which are safe and effective for both you and your clients. We explore different working postures and using your arms, elbows, table height and body weight to reduce the strain on your wrist and finger joints to and increase your working life and reduce injuries.

Deep Tissue work is not simply a matter of pressing harder. You will learn how to work both deeply and effectively for your client without causing unnecessary pain, damage or contra-actions. You will gain the confidence to work deeply and know when it is safe to do so, and you will learn when less pressure can actually be more effective. You will also practice repositioning clients for the most effective treatment.

A major focus is safety for you, the therapist. I will help you to assess your own working posture and personal risk factors and demonstrate how to avoid injuries by using your body effectively and safely. We will use some hands free techniques, and you will explore different working postures and using your arms, elbows, table height and body weight to reduce the strain on your wrist and finger joints.

This workshop is 2 days, with time in-between given to practice the techniques learned on day one so your work may be checked, refined and expanded upon during day two.

    On this course you will:

    • Observe and analyse working posture, with attention to your personal risk factors and requirements
    • Discover and implement the key principles to remember when working deeply
    • Observe and practice using your forearms, elbows and reinforced hands, fingers and thumbs for safe working
    • Gain knowledge of the ’10 second rule’ and how this protects your client
    • Determine and practice repositioning the clients for the most effective treatment
    • Discuss and review contraindications and cautions

You will be given an interactive workbook which includes pictures and room for your notes, giving you an ongoing reference from the day. You will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course.

You don’t need to bring any equipment or materials for the course as everything you need will be provided. The majority of the sessions are practical and you should dress accordingly.

  • Upper Body Chair Massage

    Next Workshop: TBA

This one-day course will teach you the techniques to perform a highly effective seated massage over clothing, giving you an alternative treatment which is ideal for clients reluctant to undress or unable to lie down. It is one of the most effective methods of treatment when time is short and can be a very efficient way of increasing your turnover of clients. It is easily portable for treatments offered at offices, fetes, fairs, and conferences, and it is ideal for massage demonstrations.

The sequence covers the back, neck, shoulders, arms and scalp. It takes 30 minutes but is easily altered to last from 10 to 45 minutes. It is a deeply relaxing treatment, and extremely effective in alleviating muscular tension. It combines elements of deep tissue massage, standard Swedish massage movements, some Indian Head Massage techniques as well as shiatsu movements and stretching.

All techniques are ergonomically safe for the therapist and emphasis is put on your working posture, enabling you to work without tiring quickly or developing RSIs. You will practice during the day using massage chairs and a table top unit although you will learn that special equipment is not always necessary and how you can work without it.

The handbook you’ll receive as part of the class includes photographs and describes in detail all of the techniques which you will learn and practice on the day, giving you an ongoing reference for this method. You will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the day.

You don’t need to bring any equipment or materials for the course as everything you need will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own massage chair or table top unit if you prefer, but please let me know in advance. This course is predominately a practical session.

    During the day you will:

    • Practice seating a client comfortably and appropriately using a massage chair, a massage desktop unit, or a regular chair and table or massage table with pillows for support.
    • Observe and practice massage techniques designed for use over clothing in a seated supported position. Feedback will be given about your techniques as well as safe working posture.
    • Perform a 30 minute massage routine, and understand how to adapt for shorter and longer treatments and for specific client needs.
    • Receive massage and share feedback with colleagues.

    This course is suitable for..

anyone with a massage, sports massage or sport therapy qualification. Other bodywork qualifications may be sufficient – please enquire.

  • Soft Tissue Release

    Next Workshop: 9 July, 2017

STR is an extremely effective technique for releasing muscle tension, lengthening shortened muscle tissue and stretching the fascia. It provides a localised stretch to specific area of the muscle that is holding tension as well as removing adhesions. This is one of the most useful and powerful techniques a massage therapist can have. This versatile technique can be used as part of any standard massage and because it can also be done over clothing it is ideal for on site, seated or sports massage as well.

You will practice the technique on different areas of the body, and particularly some specific releases for common problems such as rotator cuff restrictions and shortened hamstrings. You will learn how to use STR passively, actively and weight bearing, and with clients in different positions (couch, chair, standing). Special attention will be paid to treating piriformis syndrome which causes much of the sciatic pain clients often present with.

"Nicki's courses have allowed me to gain the confidence I need to develop my practice"

    ~ Elene Burjan, Bramley

    During the day you will:

    • Briefly review some basic A&P and relate it to how STR works on the soft tissue
    • Discuss the applications of the treatment
    • Observe and then practice using the techniques, on oiled skin and over clothing
    • Understand how to confidently use the technique on all areas of the body
    • Give and receive massage and Soft Tissue Release and share findings and feedback with other students
    • Have ample opportunity for questions
    • Learn how to incorporate STR into your treatments.

You will be given a handbook describing the technique with room for your notes, giving you an ongoing reference from the day. You will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the day.

You don’t need to bring any equipment or materials for the course as everything you need will be provided. This course is predominately a practical session and you should dress accordingly.

This course is suitable for anyone with a massage, sports massage or sport therapy qualification. Other bodywork qualifications may also qualify – please enquire.

  • Trigger Point Therapy

    Next Workshop: TBA

This day will explain what trigger points are and how you can find and deactivate them and alleviate tension and pain in your clients. You will learn how to understand and treat referred pain and how to determine where the real problem area is – which is not always where your client reports feeling pain. Knowledge of trigger points and how to treat them will make your treatments much more effective and these methods can be incorporated into your normal massage treatments.

We will explore the probable causes of trigger points, what happens physiologically, and how to identify them. We will discuss various techniques used to treat trigger points, and you will learn and practice two release methods appropriate for massage therapists and which can be incorporated easily into your regular treatments.

"Nicki is professional, patient and thorough and has the balance just right between theory and practical sessions."

    ~ Elene Burjan, Bramley

    During the day you will:

    • Discuss the theory of trigger points: basic physiology, how they caused referred pain in predictable areas, how this knowledge will affect your treatment, and treatment methods.
    • Use palpation to identify trigger points.
    • Observe and practice massage techniques of stroking and compression to relieve trigger points.
    • Review contraindications to massaging trigger points
    • Discuss how clients may make changes in their habits to avoid creating muscle tension and trigger points
    • Explore how to integrate trigger point massage into your own treatments.

You will be given a handbook describing the technique with room for your notes, giving you an ongoing reference from the day. You will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the day.

You don’t need to bring any equipment or materials for the course as everything you need will be provided. While this course has significant theory to explore it is largely practical and you should dress accordingly.

This course is suitable for anyone with a massage, sports massage or sport therapy qualification. Other bodywork qualifications may also qualify – please enquire.

  • One-to-One Tuition – Feedback Session

    Date As Arranged

We will work together in a session tailored to your own needs and professional development. You may choose to have a session working on specific techniques or parts of the body or have a more general session. The focus is your choice - we will plan it together in advance, and I will work with you to make it suitable for your needs.

You may choose to learn or review specific techniques or treatments and in some cases this may require some theory work. Normally most of the session is practical; you will demonstrate your massage on me and receive immediate feedback throughout the session with suggestions for refining your strokes and techniques. I often demonstrate movements or techniques for you. You will receive a short written report afterwards which will include notes on our dialogue so that you can focus during the session without having to worry about remembering everything discussed. This is suitable for any massage therapist who wants detailed informed feedback for improving their treatments, whether you have just qualified or are an experienced therapist.
